What are the implications of the Good Friday Agreement for customs controls?
Following the conclusion of the Good Friday Agreement, customs and security controls between the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom were removed. If the UK leaves the EU Customs Union, it appears to be inevitable to reintroduce customs controls at the UK-Republic of Ireland border. Does the Good Friday Agreement necessarily mean that such controls must not take place, or is it possible to provide customs controls in compliance with the Good Friday Agreement?
