There are a couple of different ways that someone can lose their citizenship. The first way is if they renounce their citizenship voluntarily. This can be done by filling out paperwork with the U.S. government indicating that you no longer wish to be a citizen. The second way is if the government revokes your citizenship. This usually happens as a criminal conviction, but it can also occur if the government believes that you obtained your citizenship fraudulently.
