What happens if I stay out of the UK for more than 6 months?

Periods spent abroad which exceed 6 months do not automatically disqualify you from acquiring Permanent Residence in the UK. The Home Office has some discretion when deciding what constitutes an actual departure from, and thus genuine interruption of, your continuous stay in the UK.
