Filing for Intellectual property rights ("IP") helps you create your creations. Main IP rights include 1) copyrights (more or less artistic creations), 2) Trademarks (signs which would differentiate a product and demonstrate its origin), 3) patents (technical invention) and 4) Industrial designs (appearance of a product). Usually, filing for a patent is not recommended to protect a design, unless this design is innovative. If you want to protect the appearance/design of a product I would recommend to file for industrial design ("dessin et modèle" in French) protection or even "trademark" protection if the specific design is currently used on several of your product. In addition, in certain jurisdiction copyright protection may also be invoked to protect the appearance of a product. It all depends of the specificity of your product. Similarly to patents, international trademark and industrial protection is not available but unified filing systems exist. I can't answer more without knowing of your design! Don't hesitate to contact me.
