I would add to what Anna said above that what you need to do is "strategical planning". To protection your innovation several strategies exist. Filing for a patent is one of them. Protection your invention through trade secrets is available as well. In practice, patent professionals will help you design such a strategy with respect to your economical means and usually offer a mixed strategy where some aspects of your invention would be registered as patents and other protected as trade secrets (and will help you draft corresponding NDAs, etc.)
