Getting charged as abandonment bike

I am not sure where to categorize this but I will try my best to explain. I had rented a motorbike from a rental company in Chicago and while riding I had crashed the bike. It was on tar road but skidded and slid onto the sidepath where its dirt cause it was in the outback. A state trooper saw me and took down my details and wrote the report. He helped me arranged for the bike to be towed to a towyard where the rental company then retrieved the bike. I did not purchase roadside assistance, but I did purchase full coverage of the bike. 2 weeks later, I was charged the a whopping 10k fee for all charges as they classify it as abandonment of the bike. Is there a way to fight this and if so how do I do so while not based in the US?
