UgandaDr. Anthony C.K. Kakooza is an Advocate and academician. He holds a Bachelor of Laws Degree from Makerere University, a Master of Laws Degree from Warwick University in the U.K and a Doctorate Degree in Law from the University of Illinois in the U.S. Both his LL.M and J.S.D (Doctorate) degrees were focusing on Intellectual Property (I.P) Law. He has been teaching and practicing in Intellectual Property Law matters for over seventeen years. Dr. Kakooza is a Partner in the law firm of Byenkya, Kihika & Co. Advocates in charge of the IP docket. His academic footprint is currently in the Law Schools of Makerere University, Uganda Christian University, as well as Visiting Professorships held at Cornell Law School and University of Illinois in the U.S, and Masaryk University in the Czech Republic. He is the current Head/Convener of the Intellectual Property Cluster of the Uganda Law Society and has been branded as “the Godfather of Intellectual Property law in Uganda” by the 2021 issue of the World’s Leading Trademark Professionals (WTR 1000) Magazine. He also undertakes I.P consultancies for Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB), Africa Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO) and World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). He has undertaken consultancies for ARIPO on the training of Intellectual Property law in Ghana, Zimbabwe and Tanzania. Dr. Kakooza is also a part time Commissioner with the Uganda Law Reform Commission. By way of community engagement, he is a Board Chair for the Copyright Institute of Uganda (C.I.U) and a Board Member with the Uganda Christian Lawyers Fraternity (U.C.L.F).
