You’re a Brazilian and have decided to travel to Europe for the holidays. Everything is on point. Hotel reservation? Check. Bought tickets? Check. Booked your flight online? Check.

But do you have the European travel requirements for Brazilians? Let’s get into that!

Currently, you can visit Europe without a visa. However, you must have certain required documents, which will be discussed in this article.

What are the necessary Europe travel requirements for Brazilians?

Passport

The passport must be valid for at least three months after the date of the traveller’s return trip from Europe. Therefore, if Brazilians travel to multiple European countries, their passport must still be valid by departure from the last European country they visited.

The Brazilian authorities should have issued the passport in question within the last ten years. It must also have at least two blank pages.

Travel Insurance

One of the vital travel requirements for Brazilians is proof of travel insurance. Such insurance should cover all medical, repatriation, and emergency expenses. Ensure that travel insurance is valid throughout the trip. Some insurance companies may not cover cancellations or curtailments of a trip if they are related to terrorism, war, or civil unrest. If the traveller’s insurer is one of those companies, it’s crucial to have a plan B before travelling to Europe. That way, one won’t be helpless if such unfortunate incidents occur.

Return Onward Ticket

Wondering why this is among the travel requirements for Brazilians? Here’s the inside scoop.

Without a return ticket, it might be impossible to leave Brazil. The Brazilian government must know if travelling citizens have enough money to return home. That’s why showing the return ticket at the Brazilian airport is essential.

ETIAS Requirements for Brazilians

ETIAS is the European Travel Information and Authorization System. This new travel authorization scheme allows travellers to enter Europe without a visa.

Unfortunately, ETIAS applies only to citizens from countries in the Schengen area. From May 2023, every citizen of Schengen countries must have an ETIAS visa waiver to travel across Europe.

All Brazilians can apply for an ETIAS waiver provided they have the European travel requirements for Brazilians listed below. The system will approve or deny most applications within 96 hours.

ETIAS visa waiver application process & basic requirements

ETIAS visa waiver application process starts with obtaining a registration form which collects the traveller’s information, such as passport details which should be valid beyond the intended stay in Europe, email address for notification purposes, and a debit/credit card. The application then proceeds with the applicant from an eligible country completing the registration form by filling in their details.

In the process of filling out the form, the applicant must provide some personal information such as; –

  • Full name (as it appears on the passport);
  • Date and place of birth;
  • Gender;
  • Address; and
  • Nationality.

After filling out the form, the applicant will be required to answer several security questions, including health and former travel-related questions.

After submitting the application form and the answer to the questions, the submitted information will undergo screening via various security databases such as EURODAC Visa Information System (VIS) and Schengen Information System (SIS).

To finalize the application process, applicants must pay ETIAS processing fees online using a debit or credit card. Successful applicants will then be notified via email of the decision reached.

The basic ETIAS requirements that travellers should meet to obtain an ETIAS visa waiver include;- an applicant must be a citizen from one of the ETIAS eligible countries, complete the online application form, possess a passport which should be valid for at least 3 months after departure from ETIAS country; email address for notification purposes; and a debit/credit card for online payments.

A Valid Passport

The passport must be valid for at least three months after the Brazilian departs from Europe. Also, it must have at least two blank pages. But what about travelling with children who are not EU citizens? Their passports must also be valid for at least three months beyond their departure date from the Schengen area.

An Active Email Address

The email address used to apply for ETIAS must be active. The ETIAS team will use this address to notify the applicant about the status of their ETIAS application.

A Credit or Debit Card

The ETIAS fees will be paid by the applicant’s credit card or debit card. If they cannot pay the fees, their ETIAS application cannot be processed. On the flip side, immediate payment of ETIAS fees results in faster application processing and approval.

Up-to-date Account on the ETIAS

The last item on this list of travel requirements for Brazilians heading to Europe? An account on the ETIAS website. That said, getting an ETIAS visa waiver is neither difficult nor time-consuming. Fill out the online form and pay the ETIAS fee.

Step 1: Choose a visa type

The applicant must choose the correct visa type. Regarding visa requirements, it depends on the Brazilian’s purpose of travel. For example, if they intend to do business or provide services in any Schengen member country requiring them to stay for more than 90 days, they should apply for a business or working holiday visa.

Step 2: Gather the documents needed to apply for a Schengen visa

The type of Schengen visa needed will determine how to gather documents for the application. However, regardless of the desired visa, the candidate must have these documents handy.

  1. Valid passport and travel document.
  2. Two recent passport-size photos.
  3. Completed application form and the signed confirmation of application.
  4. The documents proving the purpose of the trip, such as proof of an accepted conference, etc.

Step 4: Book an appointment for the Schengen visa application

Applicants can schedule this appointment online. Alternatively, the potential interviewee may engage the services of a visa travel agency to help with their application.

Step 5: The visa interview

At the interview, expect to answer questions about the travel requirements for Brazilians. These questions revolve around the following topics and more:

  1. Travel plans.
  2. Financial means (bank statements, etc.)
  3. Family, relationships, and marital status.

Step 6: After applying for a Schengen visa

The Schengen visa is generally issued or refused within 15 days. Some countries in the Schengen area might take a month or two to issue visas.

Suppose a Schengen visa application has been denied, and the applicant wishes to appeal this decision. In that case, they must submit an appeal within one month of being informed of the rejection of their application.

This section focuses on the steps for applying for a Schengen visa. Brazilians don’t need Schengen visas to stay in any Schengen member country for 90 days or less within 180 days. If they’re travelling to a non-Schengen country in Europe, they’ll need a different visa to visit that country.

  1. Travelling by train in Europe is cheaper, healthier, and more comfortable than flying.
  2. In Brazil, it’s customary to tip 10% of the bill. But tipping isn’t as common in Europe as it is in Brazil. There’s no need to feel obligated to tip the server!
  3. Most Europeans prefer to greet each other with a hug, kiss, or handshake. They may also use more formal greetings in the workplace or with strangers.
  4. In Europe, outfits reflect social status and wealth. The more expensive an outfit is, the more prestigious Europeans perceive the wearer to be.

Useful Tips

  1. Please take advantage of city cards. They’re available in many European cities. The traveller can get discounts on attractions and public transportation with city cards.
  2. Use apps to find the best deals on flights, hotels, and rental cars.
  3. Learn a bit of the local language. Mastering a European language is not among the travel requirements for Brazilians. Nevertheless, it’s advisable to try it out. The foreigner will be able to communicate with locals, read signs and menus, ask for help and get around.
  4. Ask about student discounts when buying tickets for attractions.
  5. Staying in hostels instead of hotels or Airbnb apartments will help save money on the trip.
  6. Join Europe’s millennial rail line. In the past, trains were reserved for those travelling across Europe on a budget. Today, many trains are fast and comfortable enough to rival flying for speed, comfort, and convenience. Also, no clouds or planes would obstruct the view of the countryside below!

How long can Brazilians stay in Europe?

Brazilians can stay up to 90 consecutive days in Europe within a 180-day time frame using the ETIAS visa waiver. If a traveller leaves Europe before the expiry of the 90 days and later desires to return to Europe within 180 days, no new ETIAS visa waiver will be required for the return.

What happens if a Brazilian national stay in Europe for more than 90 days?

For example, a country like Germany has stricter immigration laws, while Greece applies very high fines to those caught overstaying. Generally, all European countries apply various penalties ranging from;
